Cixous_Medusa_Perseus Response

After watching the Medusa video in class and watching the Jim Henson’s video outside of class there are many things the videos bring into question such as gender, rape, authority, and fate.  The first Thing that I found interesting was that in both cases of the story the authority figures all blamed the victim of the rape to always be at fault, I found this crazy because now in days in almost every case its not the victims fault for being raped at all, This was just one example that compared times from back then to times now in days. Both of these movies also highlighted typical gender roles such as the male figure being strong and powerful and always coming out on top over a female enemy. Another gender role that is highlighted was the fact that in both movies there were male role models in leadership roles that were certainly over powering female persons. Yet one more thing that is highlighted in these movies was fate, I feel that the movies were trying to say that each individual person must make their own fate and that no person is born with what fate they are going to have. I feel that myth is a construct because a myth is pretty much a story and story telling is a construct so I do believe that myth is indeed a construct. In the end I feel that Perseus won the journey because he took in and remembered everything people were telling him about medusa and he was just really focused and disciplined on achieving his goal of getting medusas head. Overall I thought both of the movies were a very cool watch and it was very informative on the Greek myth of medusa and Perseus.

Alexander Article and lesson response

After reading the Alexander article about Transgender writers I found it to be a very difficult read not only because of the content but because it was written in a style that was in itself a difficult read. The article brought to light how certain people act in different situations when they are writing and acting in everyday life. I found this valuable because you get to look at how other people write and understand how they compose their different writing materials. Its beneficial to understand how other people write because as a reader it will help you understand what point the author is trying to get across. Overall I thought this article was very important to read to understand how different groups of people write and interpret their beliefs.

After looking over the lesson plan to teach this article there were a few things that I really liked about it. The first thing that I liked about the lesson plan was that you said you were taking a different approach then most teachers do which I like because I tend to learn better when teachers take a different approach to the lesson. The second thing I liked about the lesson plan was the fact that you plan to play multiple videos, which I also like because the videos honestly make class more interesting and grab my attention better. The third thing I liked about the lesson plan was that you plan to look at all other types of media that dealt with the article, which I like because it brings in all of the different views from across the board. Overall after looking at the lesson plans for this article I like the approach you have chosen to take with it I think it will be a fun and interesting  lesson overall.

What it means to be male

·      Has a male part.
·      Has male mind set.
·      Watch’s a wide verity of sports.
·      Doesn’t hurt ladies.
·      Able to do handyman work.
·       Caring

·      Respectable
·       Honorable
·      Informed
·      Always paying attention to your surroundings.
·       Has common sense

I think this list could affect me as a writer in the sense that it would make me write in a completely different from how a woman would write. The things listed above could make a man write less sentimental and more powerful just by how he is supposed to act in our society.

Delpit and Smitherman Response

After reading both articles in Readings on writings I was able to pull a few things away form both articles. First with the Smitherman article I found the article to be a difficult read because it is writing in “black language” and it didn’t make sense in some spots. Overall I thought the article was trying to bring to light how to interrupt different forms of dialect that may not be normal to us. I thought this was effective because it makes you go outside your comfort zone to take apart this article. The second article that we read was Delpit’s Article and I was also able to pull some main points away from this article as well. The very first thing I liked about the article was that she brings authors we have already read or talked about in class such as Hooks, Gee, and Rose. One of the quotes that stood out to me was Delpit states that “teachers must acknowledge and validate students' home language without using it to limit students' potential."  This pretty much means that teachers should not try to interfere with the language style that is taught in the home because if they do it could hold them back in the long run. I like this idea because she is pretty much saying not to take away from the home language, but add it to the students family discourse. Overall after reading these two articles I was able to pull some things away that could be useful and important to me later on in the future.

Flynn response

After reading threw Flynn’s articles in Readings on writing I found it to be an interesting read and found a couple examples that connect this readings to other readings we have done. In this article Flynn says that we have to take into account that males and females interpret information and use language, which ties into our class and the discussions on how different languages have different implications. Flynn also states in the readings that she takes a feminist view when doing all of her writing, which connects to our class in the sense that the class overall is trying to teach us to write papers in a different point of view to get the same point across just using a different point of view. Overall I thought the readings offered some good points that I agree on such as how males and females can interpret the same text completely differently because I have personally seen examples of this in my life many times. Overall the articles were an interesting read.
